Frequently asked questions

Deciding to seek counselling can be a significant and sometimes daunting step.

Counselling is a beneficial option if you are experiencing emotional difficulties, feeling overwhelmed by life’s challenges, or struggling to cope with stress, anxiety, depression, or trauma. It is also helpful for those dealing with grief and loss, relationship issues, or the demands of caregiving.

Counselling provides a safe and confidential space where you can explore your thoughts and feelings with a compassionate professional who is there to support you. During your sessions, you will gain insight into your experiences, develop effective coping strategies, and work towards improving your emotional wellbeing.

If you are unsure whether counselling is right for you, consider contacting us first so we can discuss your concerns and goals. This will give you a better understanding of how counselling can help and whether it aligns with your needs.

During a counselling session at Bluebirdway Counselling, you can expect a supportive and confidential environment where you are free to express your thoughts and feelings.

Each session is tailored to your specific needs and goals. Initially, your counsellor will work with you to understand your concerns and what you hope to achieve through counselling. This involves discussing your current situation, exploring your emotional experiences, and identifying any underlying issues that may be contributing to your difficulties.

As you progress through your sessions, your counsellor will help you develop coping strategies and tools to manage your emotions and navigate your challenges. The approach is collaborative, meaning you and your counsellor will work together to find the best ways to address your needs.

Over time, you can expect to gain greater insight into your experiences, develop new skills for managing stress and emotions, and build resilience to cope with life’s challenges more effectively.

Confidentiality is a priority in the counselling process at Bluebirdway Counselling.

We understand that discussing personal and sensitive issues requires a high level of trust, and we are committed to protecting your privacy. All information shared during your sessions is kept strictly confidential and is not disclosed to anyone without your explicit consent.

There are, however, a few exceptional circumstances where confidentiality may need to be breached, such as if there is a risk of harm to yourself or others, or if required by law. These situations are rare, and your counsellor will discuss confidentiality policies with you at the beginning of your counselling relationship to ensure you are fully informed.

Our aim is to provide a safe and secure environment where you feel comfortable sharing your thoughts and feelings, knowing that your privacy is respected and protected.

The duration of counselling varies depending on individual needs and goals. Some clients may find that a few sessions are sufficient to address a specific issue or to develop coping strategies, while others may benefit from longer-term support to work through more complex or ongoing challenges.

During your initial sessions, your counsellor will work with you to establish your goals and discuss an estimated timeline for achieving them. This plan is flexible and can be adjusted as needed based on your progress and any changing circumstances.

Regular reviews will be conducted to assess your progress and determine if additional sessions are needed. Ultimately, the length of counselling is a personal decision, and we are committed to supporting you for as long as you find it beneficial.

Whether short-term or long-term, our goal is to help you achieve lasting improvements in your emotional wellbeing and quality of life.

About Katarzyna OMara

My name is Kat (O’Mara)

As a compassionate and dedicated professional, I have spent years working in the field of counselling, specializing in domestic violence and sexual abuse. My journey began in London, United Kingdom, where I worked at a trauma hospital, supporting clients from diverse backgrounds. My commitment to helping survivors heal and thrive led me to pursue a Master in Counseling in Australia in 2023.

After graduating, I worked as a police and court interpreter where I met many people affected by abuse but, due to my job description, I could not support them in the way I would have liked. However, I learned how the court and police system works- or rather doesn’t work- and the impact these failures have on the survivors and their children.

As a result, I have retrained as a domestic and sexual abuse worker. I worked in a hospital where I supported people from many backgrounds, including women affected by so-called honour-based violence, forced marriages, and trafficked women and girls. Here, I learned the difference that counselling makes to recovery.

So, in 2021 when I moved to Melbourne, I decided to retrain once again. Following completion of a Master of Counselling course, I now work with women who experience relationship difficulties, suffer from depression and anxiety, have experienced trauma, abuse and violence both as adults and as children. I love my job, and I feel that my previous work offers me a unique position from which I can support victims and survivors of abuse in their journey to recovery.

My passion lies in creating a safe space for healing, growth, and resilience. Whether working with adolescents, adults, or seniors, I am committed to fostering hope and facilitating transformation.

Every day, I am inspired by the inner strength and courage of the women who work with me through their pain towards recovery. I invite you to contact me to see if I can be of help to you too.

Let’s embark on this journey together.

Credentials and Training:

  • Registered Domestic Abuse Prevention Advocate (Women’s Aid, UK, 2017): I am equipped to empower survivors and prevent further abuse.
  • Independent Sexual Violence Advisor (The Survivors Trust, UK, 2019): My expertise extends to supporting survivors of sexual violence.
  • Trauma-Focused ACT (2022): I integrate evidence-based approaches to address trauma.
  • Attachment Theory in Clinical Practice (Awareness Psychology Clinic, 2022): Understanding attachment dynamics informs my work.
  • Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) (Sue Johnson, 2022): I utilize this transformative approach for trauma and self-harm.
  • ACT for Grief and Loss (2023): I guide clients through the complexities of grief.
  • Recognizing and Responding to Sexual Violence (RMIT, 2023): My training ensures a trauma-informed approach.
  • The Three-Phased Approach To Treating Trauma (Blue Knot Foundation, 2023): I tailor treatment to each survivor’s unique journey.
